For the first time in his illustrious career, Tiger Woods is playing in Mexico this week at the WGC-Mexico Championship at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City.
This is Woods’ first time playing in back-to-back events this PGA Tour season. Battling the elements and a wacky schedule that forced the field to play 72 holes in three days, Woods finished last week’s Genesis Open T-15 after a disappointing 1-over 72 in the final round.
Amid a loaded field of the Tour’s biggest names, Woods tees off at 2:03 p.m. ET alongside good friend Bryson DeChambeau and Abraham Ancer, who just signed a new endorsement deal. a no-cut event, Woods is guaranteed to play all four days this weekend (unless he withdraws).
Follow all the action on our live blog and below for shot-by-shot analysis of Woods’ opening round.
Hole 10: Par 4, 457 yards
OFF THE TEE (4:40 p.m.): Iron off the tee to start the back-nine and this one is just about perfectly down the middle of the fairway.
APPROACH SHOT (4:45 p.m.): Tiger was not happy with this one, despite the fact it ended up on the green. He’s inside 20 feet for birdie, but clearly the Big Cat wanted that one closer.
Hole 9: Par 4, 389 yards
OFF THE TEE (4:22 p.m.): Back to an iron here to close out the front-nine for TW. Another stinger finds the fairway. Safe, useful shot.
APPROACH SHOT (4:28 p.m.): After giving up a stroke on No. 8, TW’s in great shape to get it back on nine after his approach shot. It landed on the green, took two solid hops forward and came to rest behind the hole and inside 10 feet. Just about perfect.
ON THE GREEN (4:35 p.m.): Tiger barely touches this putt and tried to let the break do the work, but it didn’t move nearly as much as he wanted. Par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even at the turn.
Hole 8: Par 4, 516 yards
OFF THE TEE (4:00 p.m.): Driver here for Tiger on No. 8 and he tried to play a cut into the wind, but it went pretty straight. It runs through the fairway into the short rough on the left, but shouldn’t be an issue.
APPROACH SHOT (4:08 p.m.): From 224 yards out, with the tree-line guarding his look at the green, he’s forced to shape a right-to-left iron. His angle and trajectory was just about perfect, but it didn’t have enough to climb up onto the green. He’s just on the fringe.
AROUND THE GREEN (4:14 p.m.): Tiger chips this one to about 3-4 feet setting up a par save chance. Lovely touch on that one.
ON THE GREEN (4:19 p.m.): Oof. He barely taps this one and it slips past the hole. That’s a tough bogey after a hot streak.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 8.
Hole 7: Par 3, 240 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:48 p.m.): It’s a left pin, and Tiger flew this one a little long and right, but he’s on the green. He’s got a long birdie putt awaiting for four in a row.
ON THE GREEN (3:55 p.m.): Just a shade over 30 feet here for Tiger, and he gave this one just a bit too much juice. He ends his birdie streak, but cleans up for par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under thru 7.
Hole 6: Par 5, 603 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:30 p.m.): It’s the first par-5 of the day for Tiger. His tee shot finds the right rough near a fairway bunker. No chance at getting there in two, but a birdie is still in play.
APPROACH SHOT (3:35 p.m.): With water guarding the front of the green (along with two small bunkers to the right), Tiger’s lay-up shot from the rough is perfectly placed right around 100 yards out.
AROUND THE GREEN (3:39 p.m.): He’s feeling it now. As he flies this one on the green, his ball takes a short hop, then spins back right at the cup. He’ll have what looks to be around 6-7 feet for a third consecutive birdie.
ON THE GREEN (3:43 p.m.): Nailed it. A smooth stroke guided that putt in with easy for this third birdie in a row.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under thru 6.
Hole 5: Par 4, 445 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:10 p.m.): Another stinger off the tee here for TW and this one carves the middle of the fairway.
APPROACH SHOT (3:15 p.m.): Tiger’s wedge into the green lands on the putting surface, about 23 feet below the hole. He’ll have a similar putt to the one he just missed on No. 3.
ON THE GREEN (3:23 p.m.): BANG. A quick putt with some left-to-right break was no match for TW here. That’s back-to-back birdies.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 5.
Birdie-Birdie for @TigerWoods.

Hole 4: Par 4, 495 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:54 p.m.): With his low-flying stinger with an iron, Tiger finds the left fairway. He’ll have right around 200 yards to the green. Nice shot.
APPROACH SHOT (3:00 p.m.): Tiger throws a dart right at the cup here and he’ll have about 2-3 feet to get a shot back.
ON THE GREEN (3:06 p.m.): Chirp-chirp-chirp! Tiger converts the birdie putt and gets one shot back three holes after his double-bogey start.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-over thru 4.
Hole 3: Par 3, 200 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:44 p.m.): The first par-3 of the day and Tiger’s safely on the green with a good look to drop a stroke.
ON THE GREEN (2:50 p.m.): From just under 23 feet, Tiger rolls this one towards the cup but leaves it just short and right. Another tap-in par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-over thru 3.
Hole 2: Par 4, 383 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:30 p.m.): Iron off the tee here for Tiger down the left side of the fairway. He’s safe, unlike the last hole.
APPROACH SHOT (2:35 p.m.): Wedge from 130 yards out for Tiger comes up just short of the green, with a back-pin placement. He’ll have plenty of green to work with from there, but it’s a tough miss.
AROUND THE GREEN (2:38 p.m.): With the putter Tiger rolls this one right at the cup and it stops just short.
ON THE GREEN (2:39 p.m.): Nothing to see here. Tap-in par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-over thru 2.
Hole 1: Par 4, 309 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:13 p.m.): The numbers off the tee are going to be crazy this week due to the altitude, so don’t be surprised to see the Big Cat driving a green or two. After an ELECTRIC introduction, Tiger clubbed down with a fairway metal off the tee and lost it to the left. He then hit a provisional with the same club, and this one went just about as far left. Yikes.
APPROACH SHOT (2:20 p.m.): After his shots went out of bounds, Tiger’s approach shot was his fourth, and he didn’t have much to work with. He punched it out, unfortunately into a greenside-bunker. It skipped through the sand before catching the lip and bouncing back.
AROUND THE GREEN (2:22 p.m.): Hitting five now, his out from the bunker was beautiful, coming to within a foot of the cup.
ON THE GREEN (2:23 p.m.): He tapped that in for a crowd-pleasing double-bogey.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-over thru 1.
While this is Woods’ first time playing in Mexico, he’s no stranger to World Golf Championship events. He’s won 18 WGC’s in four different countries, with a chance to make it 19 in five this week.
There’s currently a six-way tie for first at -2: David Lipsky, Billy Horschel, Shugo Imahira, Francesco Molinari, HaoTong Li and Brooks Koepka.
On an unrelated note, Justin Thomas just drove a 415-yard green, so, that happened.
