Tiger Woods’ opening round of the Memorial Tournament is underway. We’ll be tracking every shot from Woods all morning. Follow along below.
Hole 5: Par 5, 515 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:56 a.m.): Another beauty with the 3-wood. Great chance to get off the par train and reach the green in two here.
APPROACH SHOT (12:01 p.m.): Took a rip with the 3-iron from 237 yards out and landed it pin high on the green. That’ll be an eagle look and a sure-fire path to get back under par on the round.
ON THE GREEN:
Hole 4: Par 3, 206 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:47 a.m.): Pretty good. On the green, well short of the flag but a relatively straightforward two-putt from there. We’ll see if he can get aggressive on the birdie try.
ON THE GREEN (11:52 a.m.): Even longer ways to go than initially thought, all of 50 feet. Tiger put a good roll on it and left it just a tad short, won’t have any problems tapping that in. Make it nine consecutive pars for Tiger.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 13
Hole 3: Par 4, 398 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:33 a.m.): Tiger called it “perfect” right off the tee and we’ll take his word for it. Dead straight with a 5-wood and in the short stuff. Hasn’t had to hit the driver very often this morning and that’s probably what it’ll be like next month at Pebble Beach. Definitely hasn’t had any problems finding the fairways today.
APPROACH SHOT (11:38 a.m.): Best wedge of the day right there. Had 125 yards and stuck it pin high, maybe 10 feet for birdie. Would be a huge make to get some positive momentum going, he’s already 7 shots off the lead with Ryan Moore tearing it up at 7 under through 16 holes.
ON THE GREEN (11:43 a.m.): Nope. Looked like a slight misread there on a great birdie chance and he’ll settle for a tap-in par. Everything looks fine at the moment though, nothing wrong with steady par golf to start out.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 12
Hole 2: Par 4, 461 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:18 a.m.): Another 3-wood for Tiger off the tee and it’s a good one. Timing and rhythm looked smooth and he’s in the middle of the fairway again.
APPROACH SHOT (11:22 a.m.): Just a 9-iron from 160 yards out and he’s still trying to get everything dialed in from the fairway. Approach went long and trickled into the first cut, definitely missing some opportunities with the irons this morning.
AROUND THE GREEN (11:26 a.m.): Gave it a run and raced it past the hole with a wedge, gonna need to mark that one for par. Not leaving himself many tap-ins this morning.
ON THE GREEN (11:30 a.m.): He’s been money on those 4-footers to save par all day and drains another one. Seven consecutive pars, still waiting for some late-morning fireworks here.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 11
Hole 1: Par 4, 474 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:01 a.m.): Didn’t like that shot one bit. Pulled 3-wood and missed the fairway to the right, looks like it might have found a bunker. Tough sledding from there.
APPROACH SHOT (11:05 a.m.): Pitching wedge out of the bunker and he’s not happy with that shot either. Looked like it shot straight up and he’s still short of the green, needs to get up and down to save par again.
AROUND THE GREEN (11:09 a.m.): Still had 71 yards to go and the approach is pretty solid, maybe 7-8 feet, but still needs to drain that one to get out of here with a par.
ON THE GREEN (11:12 a.m.): Bingo. Walked that one in from 10 feet and Tiger is hanging tough without his A game. Great save.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 10
Hole 18: Par 4, 472 yards
OFF THE TEE (10:42 a.m.): Another twirl from Tiger off the tee and he’s been locked in there all morning. Looking good in the fairway and we’ll see if he can put something close and sneak another birdie look in on his front nine.
APPROACH SHOT (10:48 a.m.): Tight iron shot from 180 yards out and that’s really nice. Looked to be about pin high, somewhere in the neighbor of 15-20 feet left for birdie. Pretty ho-hum round so far and Tiger definitely looks more comfortable than he did at Bethpage.
ON THE GREEN (10:55 a.m.): Left it above the hole and he won’t be happy with that. Gonna mark it and leaves himself a tough downhill look to save par. He made that with no problem for an even-par 36 on the front nine. Group has also been put on the clock now and they’re a full hole behind the group in front of them. In related news, Bryson DeChambeau isn’t exactly the speediest player in the world.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 9
Hole 17: Par 4, 466 yards
OFF THE TEE (10:26 a.m.): It’s a 3-wood for Tiger this time and one of his best tee shots of the day. Beauty down the middle of the fairway, little club twirl to finish and we’re off and running.
APPROACH SHOT (10:31 a.m.): Little 8 iron from 178 yards out and he’s on the green. Still well short and just barely got over the fringe, but he’ll at least have a look for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (10:38 a.m.): Missed it below the hole but leaves just a tap-in for par. Make it four straight pars for Tiger as we approach the turn.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 8
Hole 16: Par 3, 208 yards
OFF THE TEE (10:14 a.m.): Sounded good off the tee with a 6 iron but it’s another miss, long and left. Gonna be chipping out of some thick stuff and we’re definitely in grind mode now, approaches have been just a little off all morning.
AROUND THE GREEN (10:18 a.m.): Couldn’t take much of a stance and just had to stab at the ball to get it out of the rough, and Tiger pulls off a really good chip given the circumstances. Chases it just past the hole and gives himself a makable par putt to stay even on the afternoon.
ON THE GREEN (10:21 a.m.): Alright, another good par save from Tiger and he’s looking confident on the greens early today. Guessing those irons will get dialed in before the end of the round and give Tiger a chance to shoot something in the 60s this morning.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 7
Hole 15: Par 5, 531 yards
OFF THE TEE (9:50 a.m.): Overcooked it just a touch trying to hit a draw off the tee, but looked like the ball caught the left side of the fairway and stayed in the short stuff.
APPROACH SHOT (9:57 a.m.): Put a great swing on it and actually carried it through the green from about 260 yards out. Gonna be tough to get it close on his third shot, but he’s in the ballpark.
AROUND THE GREEN (10:04 a.m.): Rode the wave on the right side of the green but still didn’t play enough break, ball curves past the hole and leaves about 9 feet for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (10:05 a.m.): No dice. burns the edge and can’t get that birdie look to go, gonna have to mark his par try after leaving about 3-4 feet. Cleans that up with no trouble and he’s in with a par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 6
Hole 14: Par 4, 366 yards
OFF THE TEE (9:34 a.m.): Just an iron off the tee and it’s a good one, little low draw with a 4 iron that leaves him in good position in the fairway. Useful.
APPROACH SHOT (9:39 a.m.): Yikes. Just a sand wedge for Woods and he lands it below the cup, but the ball spun off the front of the green. Looks like it stayed dry but another miss from a great position off the tee. Could be in grind mode for a little while here.
AROUND THE GREEN (9:44 a.m.): Couldn’t do much from the rough, just had to pop it up near the cup. Leaves maybe 3-4 feet to save par from there.
ON THE GREEN (9:46 a.m.): Cleans that one up and no harm done. Par. Onward.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 5
Hole 13: Par 4, 463 yards
OFF THE TEE (9:19 a.m.): Beauty. Brought it up the right side of the fairway, gonna be in really good shape from there. Everything just looks a little more comfortable today than it did through the first few holes at Bethpage.
APPROACH SHOT (9:23 a.m.): Well, you don’t see that very often. Straightforward lie in the fairway and Woods missed the green entirely. In a bunker now and that’s really unusual for Woods from 157 yards out.
AROUND THE GREEN (9:27 a.m.): That’s not Tiger’s best either, good line out of the bunker but carrying a little too much heat. Ball rolls well past the hole and will leave a real tester for par.
ON THE GREEN (9:31 a.m.): No dice. That’s a bogey for Tiger, and it’s a puzzling one given the tee shot. Very rare to see those types of mistakes from the fairway.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 4
Hole 12: Par 3, 168 yards
OFF THE TEE (9:08 a.m.): Smooth, safe shot here as Woods lands it in the middle of the green. Long birdie putt coming up but you’ll gladly take a three here either way. Rose and DeChambeau are both in trouble in the deep rough left of the green, Woods in the A position.
ON THE GREEN (9:12 a.m.): Got aggressive on that one. Rolled it past the hole by about 3-4 feet, shouldn’t be too much trouble but still not what you’re looking for from 30 feet. Cleans that up for par and we’re on to the next.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 3
Hole 11: Par 5, 565 yards
OFF THE TEE (8:45 a.m.): There’s a beauty, looked like a little fade down the right side of the fairway and should definitely be able to take a crack at reaching in two. Also has the gum going right now, let’s see if it works as well as it did at the Masters.
APPROACH SHOT (8:54 a.m.): Had 266 yards and gave it a rip, looks like it ended up just short of the green in the right side rough. That should be just fine and we’re looking at an early birdie chance.
AROUND THE GREEN (8:59 a.m.): Not bad, looks to be inside 10 feet. Looks like maybe 7-8 feet left for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (9:02 a.m.): Boom! Rolls that in without hesitation and Woods is off and running with a birdie on his second hole for the day. This is a little better than what we saw at the PGA Championship.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 2
Hole 10: Par 4, 465 yards
OFF THE TEE (8:28 am.): Started it left with driver and looks like it didn’t come back a whole lot. Looks like it ended up in a big bunker down the left side, but camera didn’t quite pick up the landing spot.
APPROACH SHOT (8:34 a.m.): Tiger actually stayed out of the bunker but has to hit out of the thick stuff. Has 162 yards left and can’t get to the green, ball is in fine position but well short. Gonna need to get up and down from there for an opening par.
AROUND THE GREEN (8:38 a.m.): Really good. Landed his chip above the flag, ball spins back pin high and leaves him an easy one for par.
ON THE GREEN (8:43 a.m.): Alright, back of the cup on the par putt and that’s a nice start for Tiger after leaving himself in a bad spot off the tee. Moving on.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1
Tiger Woods is back in action Thursday in Round 1 of the Memorial Tournament.
The reigning Masters champion is looking to continue his run of success at Muirfield Village, where Woods has won five times including three straight from 1999-2001.
Woods missed the cut his last time out at the PGA Championship and will be playing his only tournament prior to next month’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
Woods finished T-23 in the 2018 Memorial Tournament and enjoyed one of his better ballstriking weeks of the season. It came during a rough stretch with the putter that kept him from serious contention, with Woods’ most recent victory here coming in 2012.
He’s getting off to an early start for Thursday’s opening round when he tees off No. 10 at 8:26 a.m. alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Rose. We’ll be tracking every shot from Woods’ opening round all morning long at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
